Guide
The Undying Darkhound mount has a 4% drop chance from the War Chest of the Wild Hunt. This box is obtained by completing the Night Fae covenant assault in the Maw.
First, let’s go over how to get to the Maw if you’ve never been or need a refresher. Additionally, I will also go over how to unlock covenant assaults.
How to get to the Maw
If this is your first time playing Shadowlands, you will have to go through all the introductory quests. You will be taken to the Maw in the very first part but not much will be available to you. You must complete the linear storyline through the main four Shadowlands zones- Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald and Revendreth.
At the end of this, you will get the quest Choosing Your Purpose which allows you to select which covenant you’d like to be a member of. Once you’ve chosen a covenant and completed the first chapter of the associated campaign, Bolvar Fordragon should offer you a quest called The Highlord Calls which will lead into more quests that help you unlock the Maw and meet Ve’nari. I would highly recommend completing most of Ve’nari’s questline as she will send you to different parts of the Maw that you will need to visit later for the covenant assault. That being said, I do not think it is mandatory to do so.
After completing these questlines, you should be able to enter the Maw whenever you’d like by jumping into the Soul Pillar (glowing middle) from the Ring of Transference (second level of Oribos).
How to unlock covenant assaults
To unlock covenant assaults, you will need to complete chapter 2 “Maw Walkers” in the 9.2 Chains of Domination questline. Once you’ve completed that chapter, you should get the breadcrumb quest A Unified Effort from Bolvar Fordragon in Korthia.
Covenant Assault Info
You can check the Maw map at any time to see which covenant assault is available.
Alternatively, the Today in WoW section on the front page of Wowhead has this info under the Shadowlands section. Make sure to set your region for accuracy!
As you can see from the above image, covenant assaults rotate twice weekly.
For US servers, Covenant Assaults will rotate on Tuesdays at 8am PDT and on Fridays at 8pm PDT.
For EU servers, they’ll change on Wednesdays at 8am CET and on Saturdays at 8pm CET.\
The covenant order is always Kyrian > Venthyr > Night Fae > Necrolord and then back to Kyrian.
As for the assaults themselves, they are fairly simple to do — you head to the area, talk to the leader, do the four quests you are given, and then complete a small scenario. The location of the assault and end scenario will change with each faction but the rest is the same formula.
I will now go into more depth about the Night Fae assault specifically. The Venthyr and Necrolord covenant assaults also have mounts if you’d like to check them out– Harvester’s Dredwing and Undying Darkhound.
Night Fae Covenant Assault
To start, go through the Oribos portal in your main city of Orgrimmar or Stormwind. You’ll then want to head to the top level of Oribos via the glowing teleporter squares around the middle. Once at the top, jump into the glowing middle and you’ll land in the Maw!
Once in the Maw, if you walk down the path a little, you should see a Night Fae Runestag with some Wild Hunt NPCs to your right. This is a fast travel option to the Crucible of the Damned where the Night Fae covenant assault is!
After the Runestag has dropped you off, you’ll want to find the Wild Hunt leader, Lord Herne.
You can begin the assault by speaking to Lord Herne. You should then see four quests pop up in the surrounding area. I had one from Lord Herne himself, one from Choofa, one from Bonesmith Helmir and one from Lady Moonberry. Yours will most likely be different as they are random.
If you do not see any quests being offered on your minimap, make sure to turn trivial quest tracking on. If you’re using base UI like I am, you can turn it on by going to the little binoculars icon next to the spot where it says your location above your minimap. Then, check off Trivial Quests as shown below. If you’re not using base UI or have changed yours around, it may be in a different location for you.
Since the quests are random, it’s a bit hard to explain exactly what to do as they will vary. Most quests involve killing things or picking things up off the ground in true WoW fashion. If you get stuck, there may be an extra action button or item you have to use on mobs. You can also look up the quest name on Wowhead and check the comment section. There are usually very helpful insights by other users explaining something about a quest if it’s not obvious at a glance.
Once you’ve completed the four quests, head back to Lord Herne. He will be at the top of the stairs, ready to cross the bridge at the coordinates 22.1 46.8. Once you’ve turned them in, you should get a cutscene where most of your allies get kidnapped by the Mawsworn.
Assault Ending
The next part is a bit like a stealth minigame. Talk to Lady Moonberry and she will keep you hidden while you go look for your friends across the bridge. You’ll be put into a vehicle with 3 action buttons. The first (Rescue Prisoners) is to rescue your friends. The second (Distracting Illusion) is to distract all Mawsworn Watchers (giant eyes). The third (Blinding Dust) is to blind any Mawsworn mob if it sees you in case of an emergency. The point is to not get caught by any Mawsworn. If they see you and you don’t use Blinding Dust quickly, you’ll be ported back to the beginning and must start over.
To start, use Distracting Illusion on the first eye to sneak by. Then, use it again on the second eye on the right side. If you look at your minimap, you should see when you’re nearby an ally as they’ll show up as a yellow circle. You should see Lord Herne up ahead at the coords 21.9 50.7. Watch out for the patrolling flying Mawsworn as well. Walk ahead and you’ll see Bonesmith Heirmir at the coords 22.2 51.7 with an eye starting right at them. Blind the eye and quickly free Heirmir! Veer to the far right before going up the narrow pathway and you’ll see Margrave Sin’dane in the corner at the coords 23.9 53.7.
Now, keep going ahead the narrow pathway, blinding eyes as needed. Once you get near the top, head to the right and you should see Thiernax in between two eyes at the coords 21.4 53.9.
Now that you’ve gathered all four of your allies, you can pass the shadowy barrier at the top. You must then kill the Darkmist Ascendant. Upon her death, you’ll receive the War Chest of the Wild Hunt. Good luck on looting the Wild Hunt Legsplitter mount! You also have a 11% chance to loot the pet, Invasive Buzzer, as well.
